Carlos Duarte-Costa, the self-style Bishop of Maura, who founded the schismatic Brazilian Apostolic Catholic Church, died here yesterday of a liver ailment. He was 72 years old. The Bishop of Maura, who was ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1911, rose to a high place on the Brazilian hierarchy, becoming the Diocesan Bishop of Botucatu in 1924. But in 1939, he broke with the Catholic Church, was excommunicated and founded the Brazilian Apostolic Catholic Church.

That church now has bishops in eleven Brazilian states and in Brasilia, the capital. But Bishop Duarte died without naming a successor, who is to be chosen by a conclave of bishops of the church. Characteristics of the church founded by the bishop of Maura were that its priests could marry and that mass, which follows Roman Catholic doctrine, is said in portuguese. The church’s activities are semisecret, however, and masses are said usually in private homes. The membership is not known.

Carlos Duarte-Costa, il controverso vescovo di Maura, che ha fondato la Chiesa scismatica Cattolica Apostolica Brasiliana, è morto ieri per una malattia al fegato. Aveva 72 anni. Il vescovo di Maura che fu ordinato prete cattolico romano nel 1911 raggiunse il più alto grado nella gerarchia brasiliana, diventando vescovo diocesano di Botucatu nel 1924. Ma nel 1939, ruppe con la Chiesa Cattolica, fu scomunicato e fondò la Chiesa Cattolica Apostolica Brasiliana.

Questa Chiesa annovera ora dei vescovi in undici stati brasiliani e a Brasilia, la capitale. Ma il vescovo Duarte è deceduto senza nominare un successore, che sarà eletto con un conclave dei vescovi della Chiesa. Le caratteristiche della Chiesa fondata dal vescovo di Maura erano che i suoi preti potessero sposarsi e che la messa, che segue la dottrina cattolica romana, fosse detta in portoghese. Le attività della Chiesa sono tuttavia semi-segrete e le messe sono abitualmente dette in case private. Il numero dei membri non è conosciuto.
